The Red Tree with Lesley Reece
The Red Tree, by acclaimed Australian author/illustrator Shaun Tan, is now embedded in classic Australian literature. 
The depiction of a young girl walking through extraordinary, imaginary landscapes, overwhelmed by a world that appears ‘complex, puzzling and alienating’ has become an invaluable stimulus for discussion and reflection. 
In this workshop, Lesley Reece will focus on the visual literacy aspects of these stunning illustrations and reveal the ideas behind them.

Marc McBride
Marc McBride has a unique illustration style and approach to illustration. His work is published and recognized worldwide through his picture book publications, which include The Kraken, Old Ridley, The Deltora Book of Monsters, Journey From the Centre of the Earth, How to Draw Deltora Monsters, Tales of Deltora, How to Draw Deltora Dragons and World of Monsters.
He stopped counting the number of book covers after one hundred and fifty and, not surprisingly, has twice won the Aurealis Award for his art. 
Marc is an incredibly warm and generous presenter who will guide you through a practical session, including creating with airbrush and stencils.

Public Event

An Evening with Anne Spudvilas: The Peasant Prince - Creating a Picture Book from Mao’s Last Dancer
Suitable for all book lovers, teachers, librarians, authors and illustrators.
This evening presents a rare opportunity to hear the complicated process involved in condensing Li Cunxin’s best-selling autobiography into a dramatic, yet child-friendly picture book.  Anne will describe how she travelled to China with Li, meeting his family and all the other “characters” out of the book.  Her photographs and films were used as aids to compose her illustrations with traditional materials and brush painting techniques.  Anne, a witty and warm speaker, will be surrounded by the exhibition of all the process involved in creating The Peasant Prince
and questions are welcome.

A unique opportunity to work with WA’s much-loved author/illustrator Liliana Stafford and her illustrator, in residence from Finland!  They will guide children through the exhibition of their charming picture book, Heipparallaa!, which traces the email correspondence between a Finnish and an Australian girl.  Children will work in pairs to create an illustrated dialogue about Chistmas and learn how to celebrate Christmas in the Finnish way.
