Rural & Metropolitan Residence Programme
About Us

The Fremantle Children's Literature Centre aims to make literature more accessible to all students. PP-12, in a rich, happy and stimulating environment.
Although based in the historic Fremantle Prison Hospital, the F.C.L.C. regularly carries out residences in rural & metropolitan primary/high schools, libraries and community centres.
These residences consist of experienced teachers bringing full exhibitions of original artwork, drafts, preliminary materials, etc. from Australian Children's and Young Adult Picture Books to your school/centre to run stimulating literature/writing/illustration workshops.

The following information details the requirements needed to carry out a residence.

Physical Requirements
  1. One classroom sized cleared quiet area for set up of the exhibitions, per resident
  2. 8-10 carpet covered boards (to which velcro can be attached) 10-12 pin up boards are a second best alternative
  3. Access to a class set of chairs and tables or class set of boards/clipboards for students to lean on
  4. Blackboard/Whiteboard
  5. Students to bring lead pencils, coloured pencils, scissors and glue sticks

Staff at the Fremantle Children's Literature Centre will plan your residence to suit the needs of your students. For some workshops additional materials may be needed. These may include such things as an overhead projector & screen, access to a photocopier and access to water.

Session Times

Sessions can be arranged to best fit your school timetable, however the most popular arrangements are:

3 Sessions per day i.e. start of school until recess, recess until lunch and lunch until the end of the day (workshops)
OR
4 sessions per day i.e. 4 x 1 hour sessions (stimulus sessions)

The following points need to be taken into consideration when planning timetables.

  1. Keep like age groups together
  2. Older students to have longer afternoon sessions
  3. Allow time for exhibitions to be changed if required

Other Considerations
  • It is required that each class attending a literature session is accompanied by a classroom teacher to support Duty of Care Laws.
Many teachers consider these sessions to be Professional Development to support their classroom programmes.
  • It is important that students are not shown the exhibition books before participating in a session, although other activities, such as looking at different books by the same author/illustrator can be very valuable.
Please make sure all teachers are aware of this.

Authors/Illustrators
Residences may also be arranged to include a local or visiting published Author/Illustrator to work with your students. Please phone and discuss this with Centre Staff.
