The Fremantle Children's Literature Centre presents four visually stunning exhibitions of Australian Picture Books each term. The exhibitions include materials such as original manuscripts, preliminary drawings and original artwork and show the collaborative process involved in creating children's and young adult literature. Within these exhibitions workshops are run for students from pre primary to tertiary level.
All workshops at the Fremantle Children's Literature Centre are designed to be exciting, interactive and exploratory. Learning experiences are planned to support the Student Learning Outcomes of the Curriculum Framework and may include such activities as predicting storylines, drama, writing and illustration work. Unless discussed, it is preferred that teachers do not introduce their students to the focus book(s) before visiting the Centre as teachers will find that the exhibitions act best as a stimulus to many follow up activities.
What a glorious chook book! Dottie is a lonely lady whose only friend is her hen, Paraphernalia. They share breakfast, trips into town, even afternoon tea! But when Dottie has an accident, Paraphernalia changes her life forever. Dee Huxley's free-flowing illustrations have created two whacky, fully-blown characters.
Suitable: Pre-Primary to Year 4
“At the very edge of the forest was a fox. He sniffed the air and his ears twitched. He licked his muzzle with the thought of forest ground birds.”
This is Narelle Oliver at her very best: a wonderful evocation of an Australian forest and the danger that faces the Nightjar, the Lyrebird, the Coucal and the Pitta.
Suitable: Pre-Primary to Year 7
This poignant and deeply evocative book, based on a true story, explores fourteen year old Fay's experience from Breaksea Island. After watching the men of the Australian and New Zealand Imperial Forces set sail from Albany harbour, a unique correspondence between her and several of the men on the ships commences.
Initially, students will explore the research, narrative devices and exquisite charcoal illustrations for Lighthouse Girl. The workshop will then be broadened to focus on In Flanders Fields (Norm Jorgensen and Brian Harrison-Lever) and Simpson and His Donkey (Mark Greenwood and Frane Lessac)
Suitable: Year 5 to Year 10
Marsden and Ottley have created a compelling and confronting story of one Australian family as they suffer the hardships and terrors of war, finally fleeing for their lives in an unseaworthy boat in the hope of finding a better life.
Your students will respond immediately to the message implicit within this remarkable book: that each of us wants and deserves a home. They will, within this powerful exhibition, walk for a short while, in someone else’s shoes.
Suitable: Year 6 to Year 12
Jackie French has done it again! When the King and Queen retire and go off in a campervan, they leave the kids in charge. Using only the material in their library, the kids solve the world's great environmental problems, creating a magic land of joy and hope.
Sue Degennaro's unique artwork was created using "rubbish" from her kitchen, from teabags to labels. Thought-provoking and fun, this picture book demonstrates environmental solutions are possible and also shows the beauty and hope of the generations to come.
Suitable: Pre-Primary to Year 7
When you have a big house, two small children, a game of Three Little Pigs and a huge stack of boxes, you discover that friends are what make a home.
Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood have teamed up to create a striking story about loneliness, friendship and what it means to move house and start life afresh.
Suitable: Pre-Primary to Year 3
