As well as programmes for school groups, a variety of events are held at the Centre for teachers, librarians, students and the general public. These include Professional Development sessions, Sharing Their Craft sessions with authors and illustrators for emerging writers and illustrators, After School Workshops, Open Days, Book Launches and the annual Leslie Rees Lecture.

Make Your Own Picture Book with Jenny Doust, FCLC Senior Education Officer

Duration: Friday 12 March, 9:00am - 2:30pm

The workshops held during this day will greatly assist librarians and teachers to prepare their students for children's picture book competitions or curriculum programmes. Workshops will explore and give practical activities to develop such areas as: Genre of picture books, Ideas to get students writing, Editing, Book covers, Book components, Planning - storyboards, dummy books, page layout, illustration techniques and media.

Australians At War: Picture Books for Older Readers with Dianne Wolfer

Duration: Tuesday 16 March, 9:00am - 2:30pm

This two-hour workshop will focus firstly on Dianne's research for both her picture books, Photographs in the Mud (with Brian Harrison-Lever, set on the Kokoda Track) and Lighthouse Girl (with Brian SImmonds, set on Breaksea Island in WW1). DIanne will then discuss how she created her narratives and suggest ways of using both textx in the classroom.

Suitable: Teachers Year 4 to Year 10 and Librarians

An Evening with Alison Lester

Duration: Thursday 27 May 7:30pm

Running with the Horses, Magic Beach, Imagine, My Farm, When Frank Was Four, Yikes!, Are We There Yet?, The Quicksand Pony, The Snow Pony, Bonnie & Sam series and many more.

Alison is one of Australia's most loved creators of children's books. The evening will include a brief powerpoint presentation of her career and then a discussion of Running with the Horses, her first picture book for older readers.
Set in Austria during WWII, it tells of the dramatic escape to a place of safety of some of the famous Viennese dancing horses. Alison's illustrations will be on display and she will explain how she used photographs of Austria and Vienna, along with collage, drawings and paintings to create them.
She will then discuss her successful series for young readers Bonny & Sam, illustrated by Roland Harvey and give a preview of her forthcoming picture book for very young children, Noni the Pony.

Suitable for those who want to create picture books, teachers, librarians, grandparents and anyone who is a fan of Alison's.

2010 Professional Development Programme for Emerging and Published Authors, Teachers and Librarians 

The Centre is delighted to be able to offer a series of Saturday whole day Creative Writing  Workshops with our interstate Young Adult writers Catherine Bateson, Kirsty Murray, Jackie French, Isobelle Carmody, Archie Fusillo and James Roy at the Centre and in Albany and Bunbury.

Each day will include the following sessions:
(i)   Insight into the author's writing career
(ii)  Question and Answer session on the author's books
(iii) 2 x 1 hour Creative Writing workshops
(iv)  1 x 1 hour Editing workshop
(v)   Question and Answer session on publishing

Each day will be highly practical, informative, warm and inspiring with participants leaving knowing they can apply what they have learned immediately.

Family Open Days 

Family Open Days are held on one Sunday each term, 11.00am - 4.00pm. The general public has the opportunity to view the exhibitions, meet local and interstate authors and illustrators and purchase books and artwork.

Lectures 

Matt Ottley presenting at the 2008 Lecture

The Leslie Rees Fremantle Lecture

This is an annual lecture honouring Leslie Rees, who died in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled diversity in journalism, travel writing, drama and, of course, children’s literature. Leslie won the very first Children’s Book Council Book of the Year award in 1946 with the picture book, The Story of Karrawingi the Emu, illustrated by Walter Cunningham.
Matt Ottley, artist, writer, composer and musician, delivered the 2008 Lecture.
