As well as programmes for school groups, a variety of events are held at the Centre for teachers, librarians, students and the general public. These include Professional Development sessions, Sharing Their Craft sessions with authors and illustrators for emerging writers and illustrators, Family Open Days, Book Launches and the annual Leslie Rees Lecture.

Celebrate the 2012 National Year of Reading at our inaugural Conference.
The Fremantle Children's Literature Centre is proud to present a special line-up of world class authors and illustrators who create fine literature for young adults.

Set in the grounds of our Centre in the world heritage listed Fremantle Prison in Western Australia, you will discover insights into great Australian novels and picture books which fit the requirements of the Australian Curriculum.

Conference sessions are aimed at Teachers, English Teachers and Teacher Librarians working with Years 7-12.  All sessions will be held in the main gallery with no concurrent sessions.

The programme allows for ample opportunity to network during tea breaks, lunch and sundowner drinks and canapés each day.  Throughout the Conference you can view amazing artwork from some of our great illustrators plus have the opportunity to purchase books, original artwork and digital prints in our Centre's Bookshop.

Quite simply, this is an event not to be missed!

She will show you how to transform your classroom into a fun and stimulating literary environment. Your students will look forward to writing time as much as Phys Ed and recess!  You will too!
Raewyn has an established reputation as both an author and teacher of creative writing and this session is guaranteed to inspire and empower you.

MAKE YOUR OWN PICTURE BOOK
With Jenny Doust, FCLC Senior Education Officer

The workshops held during this day will greatly assist librarians and teachers to prepare their students for children's picture book competitions or curriculum programmes.  Workshops will explore and give practical activities to develop such areas as:
Genres of picture books, Ideas to get students writing, Editing, Book covers, Book components, Planning - storyboards, dummy books, page payout, illustration techniques and mediums.

Suitable: Teachers of all levels
Australian Curriculum Links:  Literature (Examining Literature) and Literacy ( Interpreting, Analysing, Evaluating; Creating Texts)

Family Open Days 

Family Open Days are held on one Sunday each term, 11.00am - 4.00pm. The general public has the opportunity to view the exhibitions, meet local and interstate authors and illustrators and purchase books and artwork.

The Leslie Rees Fremantle Lecture 

Leslie Rees

The Leslie Rees Fremantle Lecture

This is an annual lecture honouring Leslie Rees, who died in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled diversity in journalism, travel writing, drama and, of course, children’s literature. Leslie won the very first Children’s Book Council Book of the Year award in 1946 with the picture book, The Story of Karrawingi the Emu, illustrated by Walter Cunningham.


The 2011 Leslie Rees Fremantle Lecture was presented by Libby Gleeson on the evening of Monday 21 November

Libby Gleeson is one of Australia's most eminent and beloved children's authors whose books have won or been shortlisted in major National and State Awards on over twenty occasions.  She has twice won significant international awards and in 1997 was awarded the Lady Cutler Award for Services to Children's Literature and in 2007 was made a Member of the Order of Australia.
